If you want to get AKO to work on Chrome, you need to download the DoD certificate files to your computer. However, this way is also working when you want to get access to the AKO site on Chromebook. Here are the DoD certificate to download:
To install those certificates on Chrome, you need to choose the 3 dots located top right of the web browser, then click on the Settings.
- Scroll down to Privacy and security and choose Security.
- Then, you also need to scroll down and click on the ‘Manage certificates’ under Advanced.
- After that, click on the ‘Authorities’ tab.
- Then, click on the ‘Import’ button.
- What you should do here is to navigate to the folder you download the above files to. Then, change the drop down to: All files which can be found in the lower left corner of the page.
- Choose RootCert5.p7b, then click ‘Open’.
It’s important to note that you should install the files in this order by choosing each and click on the ‘Open’ button:
- and finally AllCerts.p7b
Afterwards, check all three boxes under the Trust Settings, then click on the ‘OK’ button. \
Install the other files you have downloaded by going back to ‘Import’ tab.
Here, you need to navigate to the folder you have downloaded the files to and change the drop down to: All files which are found in lower left corner of the page.
Choose the next file and then click on the ‘Open’ button.
Reminder to ‘Open’ in this order:

After that, check all three boxes under Trust Settings, then, click on the ‘OK’.
To verify all certificates installed, you need to stay in the ‘Authorities’ tab. Then, scroll down to org-U.S. Government. Well, the certificates listed below should be there:

Now, all of the DoD certificates are installed. What you should do then is to install CSSI Smart Card Middleware of CACKey (Not both). In this case, CSSI requires two separate apps to be installed.
Download the Smart Card Connector & CSSI Smart Card Middleware from Google Webstore here.
Choose the Apps radio button on the left side of the screen.
Choose +Add to Chrome on each app and click on the ‘Add’ app button.
When trying to access the AKO site, you may need to ‘Allow’ the app.
To note, CACKey is another program you can use. Please don’t install both CSSI and CACkey. If you want to install CACKey, download the CACKey here.
You can then choose the +Add to Chrome button. After that, click on the ‘Add App’ button.
If you want to use it, you can choose Launch APP. If you encounter unable access to AKO or other DoD sites, alternatively, you can try this way below!
- Option 1: Click <shift> <ctrl> <n>
- Option 2: “Double finger tap” on the Chrome browser icon in the taskbar
